Acts 13

First Missionary Journey

1 Now there were ^aprophets and ^bteachers at ^cAntioch, in the ^dchurch that was there: ^eBarnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of ^fCyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with ^gHerod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 While they were ^{▼▼Lit performing ministry to}serving the Lord and fasting, ⁱthe Holy Spirit said, “Set ^jBarnabas and Saul apart for Me for ^kthe work to which I have called them.” 3 Then, when they had fasted, ^lprayed, and ^mlaid their hands on them, ⁿthey sent them away.

4 So, being ^osent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia and from there they sailed to ^pCyprus. 5 When they reached Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in ^qthe synagogues of the Jews; and they also had ^rJohn as their helper. 6 When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a ^smagician, a Jewish ^tfalse prophet whose name was Bar-Jesus, 7 who was with the ^uproconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the ^vmagician (for so his name is translated) was opposing them, seeking to turn the ^wproconsul away from ^xthe faith. 9 But Saul, who was also known as Paul, ^{▼▼Or having just been filled
,} ^zfilled with the Holy Spirit, stared at him, 10 and said, “ ^{▼▼Lit O full of}You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you ^abson of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not stop making crooked ^acthe straight ways of the Lord? 11 Now, behold, ^adthe hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and not see the sun for a time.” And immediately a mist and a darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking those who would lead him by the hand. 12 Then the ^aeproconsul believed when he saw what had happened, being amazed at ^afthe teaching of the Lord.

13 Now Paul and his companions put out to sea from ^agPaphos and came to ^ahPerga in ^aiPamphylia; but ^ajJohn left them and returned to Jerusalem. 14 But going on from Perga, they arrived at ^akPisidian ^alAntioch, and on ^amthe Sabbath day they went into ^anthe synagogue and sat down. 15 After ^aothe reading of the Law and ^apthe Prophets, ^aqthe synagogue officials sent word to them, saying, “ ^{▼▼Lit Men, brothers}Brothers, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it.” 16 Paul stood up, and ^asmotioning with his hand said,

“Men of Israel, and ^atyou who fear God, listen: 17 The God of this people Israel ^auchose our fathers and ^{▼▼Or exalted
,} ^awmade the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm ^axHe led them out from it. 18 For ^aya period of about forty years ^azHe put up with them in the wilderness. 19 ^baWhen He had destroyed ^bbseven nations in the land of Canaan, He ^bcdistributed their land as an inheritance--all of which took ^bdabout 450 years. 20 After these things He ^begave them judges until ^bfSamuel the prophet. 21 Then they ^bgasked for a king, and God gave them ^bhSaul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22 After He had ^biremoved him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, ‘ ^bjI have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will do all My ^{▼▼Lit wishes}will.’ 23 ^blFrom the descendants of this man, ^bmaccording to promise, God has brought to Israel ^bna Savior, Jesus, 24 after ^boJohn had proclaimed, before ^{▼▼Lit the face of His entering}His coming, a ^bqbaptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 And while John ^brwas completing his course, ^bshe kept saying, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not He. But behold, one is coming after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’

26 “ ^{▼▼Lit Men, brothers}Brothers, sons of Abraham’s family, and those among you who fear God, to us the message of ^buthis salvation has been sent. 27 For those who live in Jerusalem, and their ^bvrulers, ^bwrecognizing neither Him nor the ^{▼▼Lit voices}declarations of ^bythe prophets which are ^bzread every Sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning Him. 28 And though they found no grounds for putting Him to death, they ^caasked Pilate that He be executed. 29 When they had ^cbcarried out everything that was written concerning Him, ^ccthey took Him down from the ^{▼▼Lit wood; see Deut 21:23
,} ^cecross and ^cflaid Him in a tomb. 30 But God ^cgraised Him from the dead; 31 and for many days ^chHe appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, the very ones who are now ^ciHis witnesses to the people. 32 And we ^cjpreach to you the good news of ^ckthe promise made to the fathers, 33 that God has fulfilled this promise to those of us who are the descendants by ^clraising Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm: ‘ ^cmYou are My Son; today I have fathered You.’ 34 As for the fact that He ^cnraised Him from the dead, never again to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: ‘ ^coI will give you the holy and faithful mercies of David.’ 35 Therefore, He also says in another Psalm: ‘ ^cpYou will not ^{▼▼Lit give}allow Your ^{▼▼Or Devout; or Pious}Holy One to ^{▼▼Lit see corruption}undergo decay.’ 36 For ^ctDavid, after he had ^{▼▼Or served his own generation by the purpose of God}served God’s ^cvpurpose in his own generation, ^cwfell asleep, and was ^{▼▼Lit gathered to his}buried among his fathers and ^{▼▼Lit saw corruption}underwent decay; 37 but He whom God ^czraised did not ^{▼▼Lit see corruption}undergo decay. 38 Therefore let it be known to you, ^{▼▼Lit men, brothers}brothers, that ^dcthrough ^{▼▼Lit this One}Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39 and ^{▼▼Lit in; or by}through Him ^dfeveryone who believes is ^{▼▼Or justified}freed ^{▼▼Lit by}from all things, from which you could not be ^{▼▼Or justified}freed ^{▼▼Lit by}through the Law of Moses. 40 Therefore, see that the thing spoken of ^dkin the Prophets does not come upon you:

41 ‘ ^dlLook, you scoffers, and be astonished, and ^{▼▼Lit disappear}perish;
For I am accomplishing a work in your days,
A work which you will never believe, though someone should describe it to you.’”
42 As ^{▼▼Lit they}Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people repeatedly begged to have these ^{▼▼Lit words}things spoken to them the next ^dpSabbath. 43 Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and the ^dqGod-fearing ^{▼▼I.e., Gentile converts to Judaism
,} ^dsproselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who were speaking to them and urging them to continue in ^dtthe grace of God.

Paul Turns to the Gentiles

44 The next ^duSabbath nearly all the city assembled to hear the word of ^{▼▼One early ms God}the Lord. 45 But when ^dwthe Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were ^{▼▼Or slandering him}blaspheming. 46 Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you ^dyfirst. Since you repudiate it and consider yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, ^dzwe are turning to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us,

‘ ^eaI have appointed You as a ^eblight ^{▼▼Lit of}to the Gentiles,
That You may ^{▼▼Lit be for salvation}bring salvation to the end of the earth.’”
48 When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying ^eethe word of ^{▼▼Two early mss God}the Lord; and all who ^eghad been appointed to eternal life believed. 49 And ^ehthe word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region. 50 But ^eithe Jews incited the ^{▼▼Or worshiping
,} ^ekdevout women ^elof prominence and the leading men of the city, and instigated a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their ^{▼▼Lit boundaries}region. 51 But ^enthey shook off the dust from their feet in protest against them and went to ^eoIconium. 52 And the disciples were continually ^epfilled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
